A Mystery in Three Languages
The Rosetta Stone, carved in 196 BCE, records a decree honoring the Egyptian pharaoh Ptolemy V. What made it special wasn't the message -- it was that the SAME message was carved three times, in three different scripts: Egyptian hieroglyphics on top, Egyptian Demotic script in the middle, and ancient Greek at the bottom. Scholars could still read Greek. That meant, for the first time in over a thousand years, they had a way to compare a known language directly against the mysterious hieroglyphics.
Becoming a History Detective
Good historians don't just believe the first source they find -- they act like detectives. They ask: Who wrote this, and why? Does another source say the same thing? Is this a primary source (created at the time, like the stone itself) or a secondary source (written later, describing what happened)? The Rosetta Stone became powerful evidence precisely because scholars could cross-check the Greek text, which they trusted, against the hieroglyphics they didn't understand yet.
From Guesswork to Proof
For years, scholars guessed that hieroglyphics were purely symbolic pictures with no connection to sounds. In 1822, French scholar Jean-Francois Champollion proved that wrong. He noticed that certain hieroglyphics were circled in an oval shape called a cartouche, marking royal names. By comparing the Greek text's mentions of 'Ptolemy' to a repeated cartouche in the hieroglyphics, he matched individual symbols to individual sounds -- showing hieroglyphics were partly phonetic, like an alphabet, not just pictures. His breakthrough unlocked thousands of Egyptian inscriptions that had sat silent for centuries.
Why Evidence Still Matters Today
Historians today still use Champollion's detective method: comparing multiple sources, checking who created each piece of evidence and when, and looking for agreement across independent sources before trusting a claim. The same skill applies outside of ancient Egypt -- when you read a news article, a social media post, or even a claim from a classmate, asking 'What's the evidence, and does another trustworthy source agree?' helps you think like a historian.
