Asking a Few to Learn About Everyone: Samples

A chef is making a giant pot of soup, big enough to feed 300 people. To find out if it needs more salt, does the chef drink the whole pot? No! One spoonful is enough. If that one spoonful tastes right, the whole pot probably tastes right. That one spoonful is a SAMPLE. The whole pot is the POPULATION. Scientists, teachers, and even video game makers use this same trick every day to learn about big groups without checking every single thing.

The Population: The Whole Group

The population is every single thing you want to know about. If your question is 'What is the favorite recess game of the 400 kids at my school?', then the population is all 400 kids. Asking all 400 kids would take forever. You would need days! That is why we use a sample instead.

The Sample: A Smaller Piece

A sample is a smaller part of the population that you actually check. Instead of asking all 400 kids, you might ask 40 of them. If 30 of those 40 kids say 'tag' is their favorite, that is 3 out of every 4. So you can guess that about 3 out of 4 kids in the WHOLE school probably like tag too. You did not ask everyone, but your spoonful gave you a pretty good taste of the whole pot.

Make Your Sample Fair

To get a good guess, pick your sample by chance, like drawing names from a hat. If you only ask kids on the soccer team, they might all say soccer, and your guess about the WHOLE school would be wrong. A fair sample gives everyone the same chance of being picked.

Why Not Just Ask Everyone?

Sometimes you cannot check the whole population. A candy factory that wants to know if its gummy bears taste good cannot eat every single gummy bear, because then there would be none left to sell! So they taste a small sample from each batch. Samples save time, save money, and sometimes are the only way to check at all.

Be a Candy Scientist

Get a bag of mixed-color candy (like Skittles or M&Ms). WITHOUT looking, scoop out a sample of 20 pieces. Sort them by color and count each color. Now make a guess: if the WHOLE bag has 100 pieces, how many of each color do you think there are? (Hint: multiply your sample counts by 5, since 20 x 5 = 100.) Then pour out and count the whole bag. Write down how close your guess from the sample was to the real total. Bring your chart to share.
