Talking Through Touch: How Deafblind People Communicate

In 1887, a six-year-old girl named Helen Keller learned her first word: w-a-t-e-r, spelled letter by letter into her palm by her teacher Anne Sullivan. Helen was both deaf and blind, so she could not hear the word or see it written down. She felt it instead. That single moment opened up a world of language for her, and it started a story that Deafblind people continue writing today, using touch instead of eyes and ears to talk.

Tactile American Sign Language

Most people picture ASL as something you watch: hands moving through the air in front of a signer's chest and face. Tactile ASL keeps the same handshapes, movements, and grammar, but changes how it is received. A Deafblind person rests their hands lightly on top of the signer's hands, following the shapes and motion by feel instead of by sight. Because ASL grammar also uses eyebrows and mouth shape to show questions or emphasis, some Tactile ASL users place a hand near the signer's face to catch those expressions too.

Print-on-Palm and Braille

Not every Deafblind person grew up signing. Someone who loses their hearing and vision later in life, after already reading and writing English, might prefer print-on-palm: a helper traces capital letters directly onto the person's palm, one letter at a time, spelling words the way you would print on paper. It needs no special training to receive. Braille solves a different problem: reading independently. Braille uses raised dot patterns arranged in cells of up to six dots, scanned with the fingertips. Refreshable Braille displays now convert on-screen text into raised pins that update line by line, so Deafblind users can read emails and websites on their own.

Protactile: A Language Built for Touch

In 2007, a group of DeafBlind people in Seattle asked a different question: instead of adapting a visual language like ASL for touch, what would a language look like if it were built for touch from the start? The answer became Protactile. Instead of eyebrow movements, Protactile uses backchanneling: small taps, pats, or shapes drawn on the arm, back, or leg that tell the receiver the conversation is still connected, similar to a hearing person nodding or saying 'mm-hmm.' Protactile also describes space around the body through touch rather than by pointing into the air, since pointing only works if someone can see where you are pointing.

Invent your own backchanneling signal, a tap, pat, or shape you would draw on someone's arm, to mean each of these: 'I understand, keep going,' 'Wait, slow down,' and 'That's funny!' Write down each signal and its meaning, then test them on a family member or friend with your eyes closed to see if your signals come across clearly without any words.
