Classical vs Quantum Computing

CLASSICAL computers (the laptop, phone, or server you're using) store information in BITS — each is 0 OR 1, no in-between. They process bits sequentially or in parallel using transistors. QUANTUM computers store information in QUBITS — each can be 0, 1, or BOTH at the same time (a phenomenon called SUPERPOSITION). They can also be ENTANGLED with each other. These quantum properties enable algorithms that classical computers can't match for certain problems.

Specific problems where quantum can win. (1) FACTORING large numbers (Shor's algorithm) — could break some current cryptography. (2) SEARCHING unsorted data (Grover's algorithm). (3) SIMULATING molecules and materials (great for drug design and chemistry). (4) Some optimization problems. NOT all problems benefit. Spreadsheets, browsing, gaming — classical computers will stay better at most everyday tasks. Quantum is a SPECIALIZED tool, not a replacement.

Will quantum computers REPLACE your laptop?

Current state. Today's quantum computers have ~1000 qubits but are NOISY (errors happen often). Most experiments require error correction: encoding 1 logical qubit using thousands of physical qubits. We're in the "NISQ" (Noisy Intermediate-Scale Quantum) era. Useful general-purpose quantum computing might be 10-20 years away. But specific applications (quantum chemistry, certain optimization) are getting close.

Compare Speed

Imagine searching for a phone number in a 1-million-name list. Classical: average 500,000 lookups. Grover's quantum algorithm: ~1000 lookups. That's the kind of speed-up quantum offers — but only for the right problems.

Quantum vs classical isn't a battle. They're partners. Each has strengths. The future has both, working together on different problems.
