Estimating Smart: When "About" Beats Exact

You're at the store with a $10 bill. In your cart: a notebook that costs $3.89, markers for $4.15, and a snack for $1.95. Do you have enough money? You could pull out a pencil and add it all up exactly โ€” but the line is moving and you need to know NOW. Here's a trick real shoppers use: round each price to the nearest dollar. About $4, plus about $4, plus about $2 is about $10. You're right at the edge, so maybe put back the snack to be safe. That's estimation โ€” getting a close answer fast instead of an exact answer slowly. In this lesson you'll learn how to round numbers, when estimating is smarter than exact math, and how to check if your answers make sense.

The Rounding Rule: 5 or More, Round Up

To round a number, first pick which place you're rounding to โ€” tens, hundreds, and so on. Then look at the digit just to the right of that place. The rule: if that digit is 5 or more, round up; if it's 4 or less, round down (keep it the same). Let's round 47 to the nearest ten. Look at the ones digit: 7. Since 7 is 5 or more, we round up to 50. Now round 63 to the nearest ten. The ones digit is 3, which is 4 or less, so we round down to 60. One more: round 250 to the nearest hundred. The tens digit is 5, so we round up to 300. Practice this rule and rounding becomes automatic.

Picture a number line

Rounding 47 to the nearest ten? Imagine 47 sitting on a number line between 40 and 50. It's closer to 50, so it rounds to 50. When a number is exactly halfway (like 45), we agree to round up. The number line shows you why the '5 or more' rule works.

Estimating Sums: Fast Answers That Are Close Enough

To estimate a sum, round each number first, then add the rounded numbers โ€” much easier to do in your head. Say a class collected 189 cans on Monday and 214 cans on Tuesday. About how many total? Round 189 to about 200. Round 214 to about 200. Now 200 + 200 = 400. So the class collected about 400 cans. The exact answer is 403, so our estimate of 400 was very close! Estimating let us get a useful answer in seconds without careful column addition.

When Do You Need Exact Math?

Estimating is great for many things โ€” checking if you have enough money, guessing how long a trip takes, or seeing if an answer is reasonable. But some jobs need exact answers. If you're giving someone change, counting votes, or measuring medicine, 'about right' isn't good enough. A smart math thinker asks: does this situation need exact or is close enough fine? Buying groceries with cash to see if you can afford them? Estimate. Figuring out the exact change owed to you? Be exact. Knowing the difference is a real-world math superpower.

Estimate to double-check

After you solve a problem exactly, estimate it too. If you add 189 + 214 and get 1,203, your estimate of 'about 400' warns you something went wrong! Estimation is a built-in error-checker for your exact math.

Run an estimation shopping challenge

Make a pretend $20 shopping trip. Steps: (1) Write down 5 items with prices between $1.00 and $6.00 (for example, a toy at $4.79). (2) For each price, round to the nearest dollar and write the rounded price next to it. (3) Add the rounded prices to ESTIMATE your total. (4) Now add the real prices exactly. (5) Compare: how close was your estimate to the exact total? Was your $20 enough? Deliverable: a two-column chart (rounded prices and real prices) with both totals, plus one sentence telling whether estimating gave you the right 'can I afford it?' answer.
