What Is Marine Biology?

MARINE BIOLOGY is the study of life in the OCEANS — from microscopic plankton to enormous blue whales. The ocean covers 71% of Earth and supports an enormous variety of organisms. Marine biologists study animals, plants, microbes, ecosystems, conservation, and how human activity affects ocean life. The deep sea remains one of Earth's least-explored places — every expedition often discovers new species.

Major groups. PLANKTON: tiny drifting organisms — base of marine food chains. PHYTOPLANKTON (plant-like) make ~50% of Earth's oxygen. INVERTEBRATES: corals, jellyfish, octopus, crabs, starfish — most ocean species. FISH: ~34,000 species, more than all other vertebrates. MARINE MAMMALS: whales, dolphins, seals, manatees. SEABIRDS: albatross, gulls, penguins. MARINE REPTILES: sea turtles, sea snakes. Each group adapted to ocean life with specialized features.

What does PHYTOPLANKTON contribute to Earth that benefits even land creatures?

Why marine biology matters. ECOLOGY: ocean ecosystems are huge and connected. CLIMATE: oceans absorb heat and CO2 from the atmosphere. FOOD: billions of people depend on seafood. MEDICINE: many drugs come from marine organisms. CONSERVATION: many marine species face threats from overfishing, pollution, and climate change. Marine protected areas (MPAs) are growing. International treaties try to coordinate ocean stewardship.

Marine Life Spot

If near a coast, visit a tide pool — small ecosystems exposed at low tide. If not, watch a marine documentary clip. Notice how every level of life — from microscopic to giant — is connected.

The ocean is Earth's largest habitat. Marine biology is one of the most exciting fields — full of mystery, beauty, and urgent conservation work.
