Learn to Count Key Terminology
Every subject has its vocabulary. For counting and math, key terms include: digit (0-9), number (like 42), integer (whole number positive or negative), fraction (part of whole), sum (add result), difference (subtract result), product (multiply result), quotient (divide result). Knowing the words makes learning easier.
The Core Idea
Math vocabulary is like a toolbox. Each word names a specific tool. When a textbook says "find the product of 4 and 7," you need to know "product" means multiplication (4 × 7 = 28). Memorizing a few key terms unlocks dozens of problems.
Terms to Know
Sum = addition result. Difference = subtraction result. Product = multiplication result. Quotient = division result. Factor = a number being multiplied. Multiple = result of multiplying a number. Digit = 0-9. Number = made of digits. Equation = math sentence with =. Expression = math phrase without =.
The result of addition is called:
Going Deeper
Many math terms come from Latin or Greek. "Sum" comes from Latin summa (highest). "Product" comes from Latin productus (brought forth). "Quotient" comes from Latin quotiens (how many times). Knowing the roots of words helps you remember them AND recognize related words in other subjects.
