How Sensors Turn the World Into Data
When you walk into a store and the automatic doors slide open, nobody pushed a button. A small device near the doorframe sensed you coming and sent a signal to open the doors -- all in about a quarter of a second. That device is a sensor, and it's part of a huge network of everyday objects called the Internet of Things, or IoT, where ordinary items like doors, thermostats, and watches quietly collect data and talk to each other.

What Exactly Is a Sensor?
A sensor is a tiny device that detects something happening in the physical world -- like light, motion, temperature, or pressure -- and turns it into an electrical signal a computer can understand. Your phone alone contains more than a dozen sensors: an accelerometer that feels when you tilt the phone, a light sensor that dims the screen at night, and a fingerprint sensor that reads the ridges on your thumb. Each one is constantly converting something physical into numbers.
Four Common Sensor Types
Temperature sensors measure heat, like the thermostat that keeps your house comfortable by turning the heater on when a room drops below a set number. Motion sensors detect movement using infrared light, which is how those automatic store doors and porch lights know when someone is nearby. Light sensors measure brightness, dimming a phone screen in a dark room or turning on streetlights at dusk. Pressure sensors detect force or weight, like the sensor in a car seat that knows a passenger is sitting there and turns on a seatbelt warning.
Every sensor does the same basic job in three steps: it detects a physical change, converts that change into an electrical signal, and sends that signal as a number a computer can read and act on.
From Sensor to the Internet
In an IoT device, a sensor's data doesn't just stay put -- it travels. A smart thermostat's temperature sensor sends its reading over Wi-Fi to a small computer chip, which decides whether to turn the heat on, and can also send that data to an app on your parent's phone miles away. Multiply that by billions of devices -- smartwatches, doorbell cameras, farm irrigation systems, delivery trucks -- and you get the Internet of Things: a global network of sensors constantly collecting and sharing data to make decisions automatically.
