How 100 Drones Fly Together Without Crashing
In 2021, a light show over Shenzhen, China used 5,200 drones flying in perfect formation at once, forming shapes in the sky like a giant flag and a spinning globe. No pilot was steering each one by hand. A single computer program told every drone exactly where to go, and each drone talked to its neighbors so nobody bumped into anybody else. That's called swarm coordination, and it's one of the coolest tricks in drone engineering.

Every Drone Knows Where Its Neighbors Are
Each drone in a swarm carries a GPS receiver and a radio. About 20 times every second, it sends out a tiny message: 'I am here, flying this fast, heading this direction.' Every other drone within range receives that message. This is exactly how flocks of starlings behave in nature โ each bird only pays attention to about 6-7 neighbors, not the whole flock, and that's enough to make thousands of birds swirl together without crashing.
The Golden Rule: Keep Your Bubble Clear
Every drone in a swarm has an invisible safety bubble around it, often about 2 meters wide. If another drone's bubble gets too close, the onboard computer automatically nudges the drone away โ up, down, left, or right โ before a human ever notices a problem. This rule is checked constantly, hundreds of times a minute, which is far faster than any person could react.
The current world record for the most drones flown at once in a single formation is 10,197, set in Chongqing, China in 2024. That means 10,197 safety bubbles were being checked simultaneously, every fraction of a second, for the entire flight.
Testing Before Flying: The Simulation Step
Before any real drone lifts off, engineers run the entire show inside a computer simulation first. They can speed up time, check every possible collision, and fix mistakes on a screen instead of in the sky. Only once the simulated flight runs perfectly, with zero bubble violations, do the real drones take off.

Gather 5-8 classmates or family members in a large open space (a gym, backyard, or park). Each person is a 'drone' with a 3-foot 'safety bubble' (use a hula hoop or just arm's length). Have everyone walk slowly in random directions while keeping their bubble clear of others โ if a bubble would overlap, that person must step sideways to avoid it.
