Born Criminal or Made Criminal? The Rise and Fall of Biological Crime Theories

His theory was taken seriously by courts and scientists for decades โ and it was almost entirely wrong. Lombroso and the 'Born Criminal'
Lombroso's theory, called atavism, claimed that criminals were evolutionary throwbacks โ people born with primitive physical traits like a sloping forehead, large jaw, or unusual ear shape, which he believed marked them as biologically closer to earlier, more violent ancestors. He measured skulls and bodies of prisoners and published his findings in 'L'Uomo Delinquente' (The Criminal Man) in 1876. The theory spread through European and American courts, sometimes used to argue that certain people were destined to offend regardless of their choices or circumstances.
Why the Theory Collapsed
By the early 1900s, researchers such as Charles Goring conducted large statistical studies comparing thousands of prisoners to non-prisoners and found no reliable link between the physical traits Lombroso described and criminal behavior. Lombroso's samples were small, his comparison groups were biased, and his conclusions reflected the racial and class prejudices of his era more than actual data. His work is now taught mainly as a cautionary example of how easily science can be shaped by the assumptions a researcher already holds before collecting evidence.
What Biosocial Criminology Studies Today
Modern researchers did not abandon biology entirely โ they abandoned Lombroso's crude methods. Twin and adoption studies from the 1990s onward suggest that genetics can influence traits like impulse control or aggression, which may raise or lower someone's risk in combination with their environment. A widely cited 2002 study by Avshalom Caspi found that a specific gene variant affecting a brain chemical called MAOA was linked to antisocial behavior โ but only in individuals who had also experienced severe childhood maltreatment. Neither genetics alone nor environment alone predicted the outcome; the interaction between them did.
Almost no criminologist today argues that any gene 'causes' crime by itself. The current scientific consensus treats biology as one factor that can raise or lower risk depending on a person's environment, upbringing, and choices โ never as a fixed destiny.
