How One City Got Split in Two: A Divided Berlin
Picture waking up one morning to find a wall being built right down the middle of your town. Your school is on one side, your grandma is on the other, and now you cannot visit her. This really happened in the city of Berlin in 1961. To understand why, we have to go back to the end of a huge war.

The End of a Big War
World War II ended in 1945. The countries that won, called the Allies, had to decide what to do with Germany, which had started the war. Four winners, the United States, Britain, France, and the Soviet Union, each took charge of one part of Germany. It was a bit like four grown-ups each watching one section of a big playground. This was supposed to help Germany rebuild.
Berlin was Germany's capital city, and it sat deep inside the Soviet part. So Berlin itself got split into four sections too, even though it was surrounded by Soviet land. That made it a very tricky place!
Two Different Ideas
Soon the four winners stopped agreeing. Three of them, the United States, Britain, and France, believed in freedom to vote and to own businesses. Their parts joined together and became West Germany. The Soviet Union had a very different idea, where the government controlled almost everything. Its part became East Germany. The two sides did not trust each other. This long, tense standoff without open fighting was called the Cold War.
The Wall Goes Up
Life was harder in East Germany, so many people crossed over to the West to find better jobs and more freedom, especially through Berlin. So many left that East Germany's leaders got worried. In August 1961, they suddenly built a wall right through Berlin, almost overnight. The Berlin Wall grew to about 27 miles long through the city. Guards stood watch so people could not cross. Families were split apart for years.

Make a simple timeline on a long strip of paper with four dots for these years: 1945 (war ends), 1949 (two Germanys form), 1961 (wall built), and 1989 (wall opened). Under each dot, draw a small picture and write one sentence about what happened. Then, on the back, write a short paragraph pretending you are a kid in Berlin in 1961: how would you feel if a wall suddenly separated you from a friend or family member on the other side?
