What Plants Taught Scientists: Indigenous Botany and Herbal Medicine
Long before there were pharmacies, hospitals, or chemistry labs, Indigenous peoples around the world spent thousands of years discovering which plants could heal wounds, reduce fever, or ease pain. Many of the medicines on pharmacy shelves today—including aspirin—trace directly back to plants that Indigenous healers used first. The science of studying how people use plants is called ethnobotany.

What Is Ethnobotany?
Ethno- comes from the Greek word for people or culture. Botany is the study of plants. Put them together and ethnobotany means studying how people—especially Indigenous cultures—have used plants for food, medicine, building materials, clothing, and ceremony. Ethnobotanists travel to communities around the world to learn from elders and traditional healers. They take careful notes, collect plant samples, and work with scientists to understand why certain plants work the way they do.
Indigenous peoples of North America, including the Cherokee, brewed tea from white willow bark to relieve pain and fever for thousands of years. In 1897, a German chemist named Felix Hoffmann identified salicin—the active compound in willow bark—and refined it into a pill. Today that pill is aspirin, one of the most widely used medicines in the world.
Plants That Changed Medicine
Willow bark is just one example. Here are three more medicines that Indigenous knowledge helped scientists discover. Quinine — Indigenous peoples of the Andes in South America used the bark of the cinchona tree to treat fevers caused by malaria. Spanish explorers in the 1600s learned the remedy and brought it to Europe. Quinine became the main malaria treatment for centuries. Aloe vera — Desert-dwelling peoples across Africa, the Middle East, and the Americas applied the gel inside aloe leaves to burns and skin wounds for at least 6,000 years. Scientists have confirmed that aloe contains compounds that reduce inflammation and speed healing. Artemisinin — Chinese herbalists used sweet wormwood (Artemisia annua) to treat fevers for over 1,500 years. In 1972, scientist Tu Youyou isolated the active compound artemisinin. Today it is one of the most effective treatments for malaria. Tu Youyou received the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 2015 partly because she started by reviewing ancient herbal texts.
Why This Knowledge Is at Risk
Ethnobotanists estimate that when an elder who carries traditional plant knowledge dies without passing it on, the world loses information that took centuries to gather. This loss is called knowledge erosion. Language loss makes the problem worse. Much Indigenous plant knowledge is stored in stories, songs, and plant names that exist only in specific languages. When a language disappears, the plant knowledge tied to it often disappears too. Today, scientists and Indigenous communities work together on biocultural inventories—detailed records of local plants and the traditional knowledge surrounding them. These are stored in community-controlled archives, not public databases, so the community controls how the knowledge is used.

1. Ask a family member, neighbor, or elder if they know any plant home remedies—for example, using ginger for an upset stomach, mint for headaches, or honey for a sore throat. 2. Write down the plant's name, what it is used for, and how the person learned about it. 3. Do a quick check (with a parent or teacher) to see if scientists have studied that plant.
