Two Friends Who Studied Thinking
Daniel Kahneman and Amos Tversky were psychologists working together in Israel in the early 1970s. Instead of just guessing how people make choices, they ran experiments โ asking hundreds of people questions about money, risks, and decisions, then carefully studying the answers. What they found surprised everyone: people don't always choose the option that makes the most logical sense. Instead, people's brains use shortcuts, and those shortcuts sometimes lead to the same kinds of mistakes, over and over, in almost everyone.
Losing Feels Worse Than Winning Feels Good
Kahneman and Tversky called this idea loss aversion. In their studies, people said that losing $10 felt about twice as bad as gaining $10 felt good. This is why a kid might be more upset about losing a toy they already had than excited about getting a brand new toy of equal value. Because of loss aversion, people often make choices to avoid losing something, even when a logical look at the numbers says they should take a small risk to possibly gain more.
Store sales often say 'Don't lose this deal!' instead of 'Gain some savings!' โ advertisers know loss aversion makes people act faster to avoid missing out.
Why We Remember Some Risks and Forget Others
Kahneman and Tversky also discovered something called the availability heuristic โ a fancy name for a simple idea: we judge how likely something is by how easily we can remember an example of it happening. Airplane crashes make huge news stories, so people can easily picture one, and many people feel nervous about flying. But car accidents happen far more often and rarely make national news, so people tend to worry about them much less โ even though driving is statistically far riskier than flying. Our brains aren't measuring the real numbers; they're measuring what's easiest to remember.
