How Loud Is Too Loud? Understanding Decibels

Right now, if you're sitting in a quiet room, the sound around you is probably about 30 decibels โ€” barely a whisper. But turn on a blender in the kitchen and that number jumps to 90 decibels. Crank up headphones to full volume and you're pushing past 100. Decibels (dB) are the units sound engineers use to measure loudness, and understanding them is the first skill anyone learns before touching a mixing board.

The Decibel Scale: Why 20 Isn't 'Twice as Loud' as 10

Most number scales you know are simple โ€” 20 apples is twice as many as 10 apples. Decibels don't work that way. The decibel scale is logarithmic, which means every increase of about 10 dB makes a sound roughly TWICE as loud to your ears, not just a little louder. A 70 dB vacuum cleaner sounds about twice as loud as a 60 dB conversation. Jump to 80 dB โ€” a noisy restaurant โ€” and it sounds twice as loud again. This scale exists because the human ear can detect an enormous range of sound pressure, from the quietest whisper to a jet engine, and a normal 1-2-3 scale couldn't capture that range in usable numbers.

A Tour of Real-World Decibel Levels

Here's what the scale looks like in practice: 0 dB is the quietest sound a healthy human ear can detect. A whisper measures about 20-30 dB. Normal conversation sits around 60 dB. City traffic from a sidewalk hits 80-85 dB. A lawnmower runs about 90 dB. A rock concert front row can reach 110-120 dB. A jet taking off nearby measures 140 dB or more โ€” loud enough to cause immediate pain and damage. Sound engineers memorize these benchmarks because they need to judge loudness instantly, without always checking a meter.

The 85 Decibel Rule

Hearing experts agree that sounds above 85 dB can start damaging your hearing if you're exposed for long periods โ€” even something as ordinary as a loud gym class or a lawnmower. The louder the sound, the less time it takes to cause harm: 8 hours at 85 dB is risky, but just 15 minutes at 100 dB (like a loud concert) can already cause damage. That's why sound engineers wear earplugs at shows and set volume limits on purpose.

How Engineers Keep Loudness Under Control

Sound engineers use a tool called a decibel meter (or SPL meter, for 'sound pressure level') to measure loudness in real time during concerts, movies, and recordings. On a mixing board, they use gain staging โ€” carefully setting the volume at each step from microphone to speaker โ€” so no single sound gets dangerously loud or distorted. Many concert venues now post live decibel readings so engineers can keep the show exciting without crossing into unsafe territory for the audience.

Distance Changes Everything

Loudness also depends on how far you are from the source. Sound follows the inverse square law: every time you double your distance from a speaker, the sound intensity drops to one-quarter of what it was. Stand 10 feet from a speaker and it might measure 100 dB. Walk back to 20 feet, and it drops to around 94 dB โ€” quieter, but still loud. This is why the front row at a concert is so much louder than the back, and why engineers position speakers carefully to spread sound evenly across a room.
