How Tall Buildings Stand Up: Reading a Skyscraper's Skeleton

The Burj Khalifa in Dubai is 2,717 feet tall โ€” that's like stacking about 9 football fields on end! A building that tall would collapse under its own weight if it didn't have a strong hidden skeleton made of steel and concrete holding it up.

The Hidden Frame

Every tall building has a frame, usually made of steel beams or reinforced concrete, that works like your skeleton holds up your body. Walls and windows just hang on the frame โ€” they are not what keeps the building standing.

Architects Use Real Data

Before building, architects collect data: how much the building will weigh, how fast wind blows in that city, and how the ground shakes during earthquakes. For example, architects designing in San Francisco must plan for strong earthquakes, while architects in Chicago must plan for powerful wind gusts off Lake Michigan.

Why Triangles Win

A square frame can squish into a slanted shape (a rhombus) when pushed sideways, but a triangle cannot change shape without breaking one of its sides. That's why you see X-shaped steel beams, called cross-bracing, on the outside of many skyscrapers โ€” the X creates triangles that resist wind and earthquakes.

Real Example: The John Hancock Center

The John Hancock Center in Chicago has giant X-shaped steel braces visible on its outside walls. Those X's are triangles doing the work of keeping the 100-story building steady in Chicago's wind.

Using 20 straws and tape, build a tower frame at least 12 inches tall using triangle shapes for support. Test it by gently pushing on the side. Record in a short paragraph: how tall it was, how many triangles you used, and what happened when you pushed it.
