What Is Anthropology?
ANTHROPOLOGY is the SCIENTIFIC STUDY of HUMANS — past and present, biology, culture, language, behavior. The word means "study of humans" (anthropos = human, logos = study). Unlike narrower fields, anthropology takes a HOLISTIC approach — looking at how biology, culture, and history together shape what it means to be human. Anthropologists study living communities, dig up ancient ones, analyze fossils, document languages, examine social systems.
Four subfields (in U.S. tradition). CULTURAL ANTHROPOLOGY: living societies — family, religion, politics, economics. ARCHAEOLOGY: past human cultures via material remains. PHYSICAL/BIOLOGICAL ANTHROPOLOGY: human evolution, primates, biological variation. LINGUISTIC ANTHROPOLOGY: language and how it shapes culture. Each subfield has methods and questions, but united by interest in human-ness. APPLIED anthropology brings the knowledge to solve practical problems (development, public health, design).
When studying a different culture, an anthropologist tries to:
Famous anthropologists. FRANZ BOAS: founded American anthropology, fought scientific racism. MARGARET MEAD: studied gender across cultures (controversial but influential). CLAUDE LÉVI-STRAUSS: structural analysis of myths and kinship. CLIFFORD GEERTZ: "thick description" of cultures. DIAN FOSSEY (gorillas), JANE GOODALL (chimpanzees) — primatology. Each shaped how we think about humanity. Their work challenged ethnocentrism and revealed cultures as complex, coherent systems — not just exotic curiosities.
Notice Your Culture
One anthropology trick: try seeing your OWN culture as an outsider. What rituals do you have around food, greetings, weddings, holidays? They feel natural to you, but are deeply specific. Anthropology is partly noticing what was invisible.
Anthropology is humanity studying humanity — across time, space, and difference. Its insights help us understand both others and ourselves.
