From Seed to Harvest: How Farmers Grow a Corn Crop
A single corn seed planted in the spring can grow into a stalk over 8 feet tall by summer, producing an ear packed with 600 kernels or more. In the United States, farmers plant more than 90 million acres of corn every year -- that's an area bigger than the entire state of Montana.

Stage 1: Planting and Germination
Farmers plant corn seeds about 1.5 to 2 inches deep once soil temperature reaches around 50 degrees Fahrenheit, usually in April or May depending on the region. Inside each seed is an embryo and a food supply called the endosperm. When the seed absorbs water, it swells and cracks open, sending a root downward and a shoot upward -- this process is called germination and usually takes 5 to 10 days.
Stage 2: Vegetative Growth
Once the shoot breaks through the soil, the plant grows new leaves roughly every 3 to 4 days during peak growth. Scientists label each stage V1, V2, V3 and so on, counting the leaves. Corn needs three main nutrients from soil: nitrogen (for leafy green growth), phosphorus (for strong roots), and potassium (for overall plant health). Farmers often test soil before planting to see which nutrients are missing and add exactly what's needed as fertilizer.
Stage 3: Tasseling and Pollination
About 60 days after planting, a tassel appears at the top of the plant releasing pollen, while silky threads called silks grow from the developing ear lower on the stalk. Each silk strand connects to one single kernel -- wind carries pollen from the tassel down to the silks, and every silk that gets pollinated grows into one kernel of corn. This is why a strong wind-free week during tasseling matters so much to a farmer's final harvest.
If corn experiences drought or extreme heat during tasseling and silking, pollination can fail and kernels won't form -- even if the rest of the growing season was perfect. Farmers watch weather forecasts especially closely during this two-week window.
Stage 4: Harvest and Crop Rotation
Corn is ready to harvest in the fall, usually 100 to 120 days after planting, once kernels have dried down to about 15-20% moisture. Many farmers then rotate their fields, planting soybeans the following year instead of corn again. Soybeans are legumes that add nitrogen back into the soil through bacteria on their roots, which reduces how much fertilizer the next corn crop will need.

Track a Corn Growth Timeline
Create a timeline poster with four labeled sections: Germination (Day 1-10), Vegetative Growth (Day 10-60), Tasseling/Pollination (Day 60-75), and Harvest (Day 100-120).
