TinkerCAD: Build Your First 3D Model Step by Step
Every 3D-printed toy, prosthetic hand, and custom spacecraft part starts the same way: someone designed it on a computer. TinkerCAD (tinkercad.com) is a free tool made by Autodesk that lets anyone build 3D shapes right in a web browser โ no downloads needed. More than 60 million people have used it to design everything from keychains to custom phone cases to replacement parts for broken toys.

The TinkerCAD Workspace: Your Design Studio
When you open TinkerCAD and start a new design, you see three main areas: **The Workplane** โ the flat, dotted grid in the center. This is where you build your model, like a table you are building on top of. **The Shapes Panel** โ on the right side. It holds all the 3D building blocks: boxes, cylinders, spheres, cones, pyramids, text, and more. Scroll down to find special shapes like stars and arrows. **The View Cube** โ in the top-right corner. Click any face (Top, Front, Right) to jump to that angle. The Core Idea: Shapes and Holes
TinkerCAD is built on one powerful concept: every 3D model is made by adding solid shapes together or cutting holes out of them. **Adding shapes:** Drag any shape from the Shapes Panel onto the Workplane. White handles appear around the shape for resizing, and a black arrow on top lets you move it up off the Workplane. The inspector box in the top-right corner shows exact dimensions, and you can type numbers directly to make the shape precisely the size you want โ for example, 30mm wide, 15mm deep, 5mm tall. **Using Holes:** In the Shapes Panel, every shape has a toggle on the right side. Switch a shape to 'Hole' and it turns translucent red. Place the hole shape so it overlaps a solid shape. Then select both shapes and press Ctrl+G to group them. TinkerCAD carves the hole shape's volume out of the solid โ like pressing a cookie cutter into clay. Example: Start with a solid box. Place a cylinder set to Hole going through the center. Select both and press Ctrl+G. You now have a box with a perfectly round tunnel drilled through it.
Build a Keychain Tag โ Step by Step
Let's design a small, 3D-printable keychain name tag: **Step 1 โ Create the tag body.** Drag a Box shape onto the Workplane. In the inspector, resize it to 40mm wide, 20mm tall, and 3mm deep. This is your tag. **Step 2 โ Make the keyring hole.** Drag a Cylinder shape. Switch it to Hole mode. Resize it to 6mm diameter and 4mm deep. Move it to one short end of the box, centered vertically, about 5mm from the edge. **Step 3 โ Add your initial.** In the Shapes Panel scroll down to 'Text.' Drag it onto the box surface. Type your first initial in the popup. Set the depth to 1mm, resize to fit, and nudge it to sit centered on the tag. **Step 4 โ Group everything.** Click and drag to select all three shapes, then press Ctrl+G. Your tag is now one single object. **Step 5 โ Export.** Click the Export button in the toolbar. Choose .STL format and save the file. This file is exactly what a 3D printer needs to produce your design. A standard desktop printer can print this tag in about 15 minutes in PLA plastic.

Design Something You Would Actually Use
Open TinkerCAD at tinkercad.com and log in or create a free account (ask an adult to help if needed). Your challenge: design ONE small object you would actually find useful or fun. Ideas include a name tag for your backpack, a pencil holder, a ring for your finger, a custom board-game token, or a stand for a small device. Your design must use at least TWO different shapes and at least ONE hole. When finished, take a screenshot of your finished model from the Front view and from the Top view. Write 2โ3 sentences describing: what the object is for, which shapes you used to build it, and where the hole is and what it does. Share your screenshots and description with your class or a family member.
