β‘ His main work
Felz Energy Consultants
Own Your Energy
Joe called it a non-traditional renewable energy braintrust β built to get real electrical knowledge and real power generation to ordinary people in ordinary situations. The whole point was energy independence: giving people the education and the equipment to own their own power instead of renting it.
felzenergy.com βWhat he actually did
Not a storefront with a consultant bolted on β a working electrician who happened to sell the gear he trusted.
Solar Design
He would size a system for your actual situation β van, homestead, rooftop, boat, farm. Free to his solar clients; a flat fee to anyone who just wanted the design and nothing else.
Installation & Service
Hands-on work as a licensed electrician, and the ongoing servicing of systems already in the ground.
FelzCalc & Load Calculator
Tools he wrote himself so people could work out their own electric load before spending a dollar. He wanted you to understand the numbers, not trust him on them.
Joe's Picks
A storefront category of gear he had personally vetted. Inverters, batteries, storage systems β the things he would actually put in his own van.
How he talked to people
Joe had helped hundreds of people go solar, and the thing he heard most often was that they wished they had spoken to someone before they started. He wrote a plain-language guide to solar to fix that β and then told readers outright that if they hit a wall, they should just call him.
Iβve helped hundreds of people go solar β van builds, homesteads, rooftops, boats, you name it. The number one thing I hear? βI wish Iβd talked to someone first.β
No fluff, no upsell β his words. He priced a call, told you exactly what you would walk away with, and left it at that.
He was still teaching
What we found in the archive that stopped us.
His events calendar was still up, and still filling. Intro to Solar, online, once a month β September, October, November and December 2026, and January 2027. Alongside it, a recurring Intro to Social Media class.
He had every intention of teaching all of them.
So the classes carry on here. The Joe Felz Memorial Solar Exploration Lab β the free lab he sponsored, now named for him β teaches the same thing he did: size an array, pick a battery, wire it safely, check the voltage drop, and understand every number before you spend a cent. Free, forever, for any child anywhere.
