Bosses Make Good Choices

Have you ever grabbed a cookie before checking if dinner was almost ready — and then not been hungry when the real food came? Or said yes to something too quickly and then wished you had thought about it first? Everyone rushes sometimes. But the best bosses have learned a very important habit: they pause and think before they decide. Being the boss of your AI tools is not just about having the power to decide. It is about using that power wisely.

What Makes a Choice a Good One?

A good choice is not just any choice. A good choice is one you thought about. Good bosses ask themselves questions before deciding. What do I actually want here? Will this choice help me or hurt me? Am I choosing this because I really want it, or just because it was the easiest thing in front of me? Will I be proud of this choice tomorrow? When you are using AI, these questions matter a lot. It is very easy to just take whatever AI gives you without thinking. But that is not being the boss — that is letting AI make the choice for you by default. A real boss pauses, reads, thinks, and then decides.

The Big Idea

Good bosses think before they decide. When you use AI, pausing to read, question, and evaluate what AI gives you is the most important boss habit you can build.

Here is a story about two very different bosses. Twin sisters Maya and Zara both used an AI tool to help them plan a birthday party for their mom. Zara moved fast. The AI suggested a plan and Zara immediately said great! and sent it to her aunt to start buying supplies. She did not notice that the AI had scheduled the party on a day her mom had an important work event. The party had to be moved at the last minute. Maya read the plan carefully. She noticed the scheduling problem. She asked the AI to adjust the plan. Then she showed it to her dad before doing anything else. Her mom's party went perfectly. Both sisters used the same AI tool. But Maya paused and thought. That one habit made everything different.

Good bosses also know when a choice is too important to rush. If AI helps you decide what to draw for fun, a quick choice is fine. But if AI helps you with something more important — a school project, information about health, plans that involve other people — that is a moment for the pause-and-think habit. The bigger the decision, the more carefully a good boss thinks about it. That is true for company bosses, team captains, and kids who are in charge of their own AI tools.

The Boss Pause

Before using anything AI gives you, try the Boss Pause: stop for three seconds, read it again, and ask yourself: Is this really what I want? Is it correct? Will I be glad I used this? Three seconds can change everything.

Why did Zara's party planning go wrong even though she used AI?

Which of these is an example of being a thoughtful boss when using AI?

The Boss Decision Journal

  1. For one week, whenever you make a decision — big or small — write it down in a small notebook.
  2. For each decision, note: What was the choice? Did you pause and think, or did you decide quickly? How did it turn out?
  3. At the end of the week, look back at your entries. Were the decisions you thought about carefully better than the ones you rushed?
  4. Now think about how this applies to using AI. Write down one rule for yourself about when to use the Boss Pause with AI tools.
  5. Share your rule with someone you trust and ask if they think it is a good one.
