Using Robots Kindly

Think about a pair of scissors. Scissors are a great tool. You can use them to make art, cut wrapping paper for a gift, or trim paper for a school project. But scissors could also be used to destroy something or to hurt someone. The scissors did not decide how to be used. The person holding them did. Robots are the same. A robot is a tool. It can be used to help people — or it could be used carelessly or even harmfully. That means the people who build and use robots have a big responsibility to use them kindly and wisely. Today we will explore what that means.

Good Ways to Use Robots

There are so many wonderful ways to use robots. Let us look at a few. Delivery robots are being used in some cities to bring medicine to people who are sick and cannot leave their homes. That is a kind use — it helps someone in need. Search and rescue robots go into collapsed buildings after earthquakes to find people trapped under rubble. Sending a robot instead of a person saves the rescuer from danger. That is a responsible use — it protects lives. Agriculture robots spray exactly the right amount of water on crops. They do not waste water or use too many chemicals. That is a careful, thoughtful use — good for people and for the planet. Education robots help students who need extra practice with reading or math. A robot can be patient for as long as the student needs and never gets frustrated. That is a kind and caring use. All of these uses share something in common: the goal is to help people or make the world better.

The Big Idea

Using a robot kindly means using it for a good purpose — to help people, keep people safe, or make something better. The person choosing how to use the robot is the one responsible for whether it is used well or poorly.

What Happens When Robots Are Misused

Just as there are good ways to use robots, there are also careless or harmful ways. A drone robot could be flown too close to an airplane, which is very dangerous. That would be irresponsible use. A robot could be programmed to invade people's privacy by recording them without their knowledge. That would be unkind and unfair. A robot toy could be used to scare or bully someone. That is hurtful. When a robot is used badly, the robot itself is not to blame. The robot just does what it is told. The responsibility belongs to the person who programmed it or chose how to use it. This is an important idea: robots do not have opinions or feelings about what they are doing. They follow instructions. That is why the humans in charge of robots must think carefully about what they tell their robots to do.

Fill in the blank to complete this important idea.

When a robot is used badly, the who programmed or controlled it is responsible — not the robot itself.

Marcus got a small programmable robot for his birthday. His little sister Jade was afraid of it at first because it moved unexpectedly. Marcus thought about how to use his robot kindly. He decided to program it to do a little dance and carry a paper flower to Jade as a gift. Jade laughed and was not afraid anymore! Then Marcus and Jade took turns programming the robot to do fun things: deliver snacks, draw shapes on paper, and race across the kitchen floor. Marcus used his robot to connect with his sister and make her laugh. He thought about her feelings and made a choice that brought joy. That is using a robot kindly.

Three Questions for Kind Robot Use

Before using a robot for something, ask yourself three questions: Does this help someone? Does this hurt or bother anyone? Would I be okay if someone used a robot this way toward me? If the answers are yes, no, and yes — you are using it kindly!

A delivery robot brings medicine to a sick neighbor who cannot leave their house. Is this a good use of a robot?

If a person programs a robot to record people without telling them, who is responsible?

Robot Use: Good or Not Good?
