Write an AI Safety Case

Analyse a system's risks and argue for safeguards.

Your mission

Write a safety case for an AI system: a structured argument about its risks and the safeguards that make it acceptable to deploy.

What you'll need

  • A document or slide tool
  • Research on AI risks and past incidents
  • An AI system or proposal to analyse

Your step-by-step plan

  1. Describe the system

State what the AI does, where it is used, and who it affects.

  2. Map the risks

Identify ways it could cause harm, including misuse and specification gaming.

  3. Propose safeguards

For each risk, design a safeguard — testing, monitoring, limits, human oversight.

  4. Argue the case

Write a clear argument for whether, and under what conditions, the system should be used.

Make it yours

  • Add a “what we would monitor after launch” plan.
  • Have a peer red-team your safety case.

How you'll know you succeeded

  • Risks are specific, not vague.
  • Each risk has a matched safeguard.
  • The conclusion is honest about residual risk.
