Train Your Own Smart Helper

Teach a paper “AI” to sort things the way you want.

Your mission

Create a make-believe smart helper and teach it a rule by showing it examples — just like real AI learns. Then test whether it truly learned.

What you'll need

  • Paper and colouring pens
  • A pile of small objects or picture cards to sort
  • Two bowls or boxes for the sorted groups

Your step-by-step plan

  1. Pick a secret rule

Choose one sorting rule, like “round things” versus “not round things.”

  2. Show examples

Sort six objects yourself into two groups — these are your helper's training examples.

  3. Write the learned rule

Look at your groups and write the pattern in your own words. That is what your helper “learned.”

  4. Test it

Sort four brand-new objects using only the written rule, and count how many it gets right.

Make it yours

  • Try a trickier rule with three groups instead of two.
  • Give a friend your written rule and see if they sort the same way.

How you'll know you succeeded

  • Your helper has one clear, written rule.
  • You tested it on objects it never saw before.
  • You can explain why it made any mistakes.
