Asking for a Change
You have looked at what the AI made, you noticed what you like, and you spotted something you want to improve. Now comes a really important skill: asking for that change. How you ask makes a huge difference in what you get back. Today you will learn how to ask well.
One Change at a Time
When you want to improve something, it can be tempting to ask for lots of changes all at once. But asking for too many things at once confuses even the most helpful AI. Think about asking a friend to help you fix your sandwich. If you say, 'Make it less messy, add more cheese, cut it into triangles, and put it on a different plate,' your friend might get confused about where to start. It is much better to say one clear thing: 'Can you add more cheese, please?' With an AI helper, the same rule applies. Pick the most important one change and ask for just that.
A great change request names exactly what you want different and keeps everything else the same. One clear change is almost always better than many changes jumbled together.
A good change request has three parts. Part one: Tell the AI what to keep. 'Keep the story about Biscuit the dog.' Part two: Tell the AI what to change. 'Make the ending longer and more exciting.' Part three: Give one detail if it helps. 'Biscuit should find the treasure and then share it with his friends.' Put it all together: 'Keep the story about Biscuit the dog, but make the ending longer and more exciting. Biscuit should find the treasure and then share it with his friends.' That is a clear, kind, specific request. The AI knows exactly what to do.
Prompt Challenge
You asked an AI to write a poem about the ocean. The poem is good but it is too short — only two lines. Write a prompt asking the AI to make the poem longer while keeping the ocean theme.
Your prompt should…
- Tell the AI what you want to keep from the original
- Ask for the specific change you want (longer poem)
- Include a detail about how long or what to add
Notice that a good change request is always polite and clear. You are having a conversation with a tool that is trying to help you. The clearer and kinder you are, the better the results will be. Also notice that asking for a change does not mean you are unhappy with the AI. It just means you know what you want next. That is a sign of a confident creator.
If you ask for too many changes at once and the result is worse, it is hard to know which change caused the problem. Keep it to one change at a time so you stay in control.
What is the best way to ask an AI for an improvement?
Which of these is the best change request?
Write a Change Request
- Think of something you would like an AI to make for you — a short story, a poem, a list of ideas, or anything.
- Imagine the AI gave you a first version that is pretty good but missing one thing.
- Write a change request using the three-part rule: tell it what to keep, tell it what to change, and add one helpful detail.
- Read your request out loud. Does it make sense? Is it clear? Is it friendly?
- Share your change request with a partner and see if they can understand exactly what you want.
