Building with AI (Vibe Coding)

Your Idea, the AI's Help

Here is a really important truth about working with AI helpers: the idea is always yours. The AI did not wake up one morning and decide to make a story about a robot chef. You did. The AI did not dream up a game where players collect glowing crystals. You did. Every creation that you and an AI helper make together starts with a spark in your imagination — not in the computer.

Who Does What?

When you work with an AI helper, you and the AI each have a job. Your job is to have the idea, describe it clearly, and decide if the result is good. You bring creativity, feelings, and imagination. You know what you like. You know what matters to you. Only you can bring your unique view of the world. The AI's job is to take your description and try to build what you imagined as fast as it can. It is very good at putting words together, arranging images, and following instructions. It works quickly so you can see results and keep improving them. Together you are a team — but you are always the team captain.

You Are the Creator

The idea is yours. The imagination is yours. The AI is a fast, helpful builder that works for you. Without your idea, there is nothing to build.

Think about an architect and a construction crew. The architect is the person who imagines the building — the shape, the rooms, the windows, the feeling of the space. The construction crew builds what the architect designed. You are the architect. The AI helper is like a very fast construction crew. The crew can build quickly and follow plans well, but it cannot imagine the building for you. So when you look at something you made with an AI helper, you can be proud. You designed it. You brought the idea. You made the decisions. The AI just helped you build it faster.

Prompt Challenge

Write a prompt where you describe an invention of your own design for an AI helper to write about.

Your prompt should…

  • Name your invention and explain what it does
  • Describe who would use it and why it would help them
  • Tell the AI the tone you want — exciting, funny, or informative

Here is something wonderful about being the creator: you get to decide what is good enough. If the AI makes a picture that is almost right but the colors are wrong, you can ask for different colors. If the story is too long, you can ask for a shorter version. If the game rules are confusing, you can ask the AI to explain them more simply. You are not stuck with the first thing the AI gives you. You can keep improving it until it matches your idea. That back-and-forth — you giving feedback, the AI trying again — is how real creative work happens.

Give Feedback Like a Director

Movie directors tell actors: try it again, but this time more excited. You can do the same with an AI helper: try it again, but this time make it funnier. Keep going until it feels right.

Who comes up with the original idea when you work with an AI helper?

What can you do if the AI helper makes something that is almost right but not quite?

I Am the Architect

  1. Draw a simple floor plan of your dream bedroom or dream treehouse on a piece of paper. Do not worry about making it perfect — stick shapes are fine!
  2. For each room or area, write one word describing how you want it to feel: cozy, exciting, calm, magical.
  3. Now write a two-sentence description of your dream space, as if you were telling an AI helper to write a story set inside it.
  4. Share your floor plan and description with someone. Notice that everything in your description came from your own imagination — the AI would just be helping you put it into words.
