Clear Words, Clear Results

Imagine you asked a friend to draw you a dog. They hand you a picture — but it looks nothing like the dog you had in mind! Did your friend do something wrong? Maybe not. Maybe you just needed better words to explain what you meant. Today we are going to learn something really powerful: the words you choose change the result you get.

Words Are Instructions

When you talk to an AI, you are giving it instructions using words. The AI reads your words and does its best to understand what you want. If your words are clear, the AI has a good chance of getting it right. If your words are fuzzy or missing pieces, the AI has to guess — and guesses are not always right. Think of it like giving someone directions to your house. If you say 'It's somewhere over there,' they will probably get lost. But if you say 'Turn left at the big oak tree, then go to the third house on the right,' they will find you easily.

The Big Idea

Clearer words lead to closer results. Every detail you add helps the AI understand exactly what you have in mind.

Here is a real example. Suppose you want an AI to help you write a story. You could say: 'Write a story.' The AI might write anything — a sad story, a long story, a boring story. Or you could say: 'Write a short, funny story about a puppy who is afraid of balloons.' Now the AI knows it should be short, funny, and about a very specific puppy problem. That result is going to be much closer to what you imagined! The second description took only a few extra words — but what a difference those words make.

The good news is that being clear is a skill. That means you can practice it and get better at it. In this module, we are going to practice together, lesson by lesson, until giving clear instructions feels natural and fun.

You Already Know How to Do This

Every time you explain something to a friend or write a note, you are practicing being clear. You are already on your way!

You want an AI to draw a cat. Which description will likely give you the best result?

When an AI gets a fuzzy description, what does it do?

Before and After

  1. Think of something you would like an AI to help you make — a picture, a story, or a poem.
  2. Write a short, fuzzy description of it. Example: 'A story about an animal.'
  3. Now read your fuzzy description. What is missing? What questions does a friend still have?
  4. Write a second, clearer description. Add at least three new details.
  5. Share both descriptions with a friend or family member. Ask them: which one do they understand better?
  6. Talk about what details made the second version clearer.
