Module Check: AI Across Society

You have traveled across seven sectors of modern society — healthcare, transportation, finance and banking, entertainment and media, science, government and cities, and education — examining how AI is deployed in each. You have seen AI flag tumors, route drivers, detect fraud in milliseconds, recommend the next song, predict protein shapes, adjust traffic signals, and tutor students. You have also seen AI fail, discriminate, and create new risks. This module check pulls every thread together.

Module Quiz

A hospital deploys an AI system that analyzes radiology scans and sends a report to a physician, who then makes the diagnosis and decides on treatment. What design principle does this illustrate?

A navigation app users have been using for years improves its traffic predictions over time as more drivers use it. What phenomenon makes this possible?

An AI recommendation system on a video platform is found to consistently lead users from moderate content to progressively more extreme content. What is the most likely cause?

A city government uses an AI system to decide which families receive social services, but families from certain ethnic backgrounds are denied at significantly higher rates than others. Which concept best explains this outcome?

Why was AlphaFold's protein structure prediction considered a breakthrough for drug discovery specifically?

Which statement MOST accurately captures the central lesson of this module?

The Through-Line of This Module

Every sector you studied had the same structure: AI brings scale and pattern-recognition that humans cannot match, AND it introduces risks that humans must manage. The technology and the governance challenge arrive together. Being AI-literate means understanding both — not just the impressive capability, but the conditions under which that capability can fail or cause harm.

Capstone — AI Sector Report

  1. Choose ONE sector from this module that you find most compelling or important. Write a structured report with the following four sections.
  2. Section 1 — The Problem AI Solves (3-4 sentences): Describe the specific problem or inefficiency in this sector that AI was developed to address. Be concrete — name the bottleneck, the scale of the challenge, or the human limitation that AI overcomes.
  3. Section 2 — How It Works (3-4 sentences): Describe the AI application in enough technical detail that someone who has not taken this module could understand it. What data does it use? What does it output? What type of AI or ML technique powers it?
  4. Section 3 — Benefits and Risks (4-6 sentences): Name two specific benefits supported by evidence from this module. Name two specific risks or failure modes — bias, edge cases, privacy concerns, or misaligned optimization. For each risk, name one safeguard that is being used or should be used.
  5. Section 4 — Your Recommendation (2-3 sentences): Given the benefits and risks you analyzed, what is your recommendation for how society should approach this AI application? Should deployment accelerate, slow down, or continue with specific reforms? Defend your position.
