AI Spotter
You have learned a lot about AI in the world around you. Smart speakers at home. Reading apps at school. Map apps in the car. Game characters that react to you. Invisible helpers in email and weather apps. Now it is time to use all of that knowledge and go on a real mission: become an AI Spotter!
What Is an AI Spotter?
An AI Spotter is someone who looks at the world with curious eyes and asks the question: is AI helping here? Spotting AI is a skill. At first you might only notice the obvious ones — a voice assistant, a robot vacuum. But the more you practice, the more you start to notice the quieter ones: the app that always knows your favorite music, the checkout machine that weighs your bag, the bus sign with a real-time countdown. Every time you spot an AI helper, you understand the world a tiny bit better. That is what scientists, engineers, and curious people do — they notice things others walk past.
Over the next day, look for AI helpers in every part of your life. At home, at school, in the car, at the store — everywhere. Keep a record of what you find, what the AI does, and whether it was helpful.
The AI Spotter Challenge
- This is your main mission for this lesson. Complete all four rounds.
- ROUND 1 — HOME HUNT
- Walk through at least three rooms in your home and look for any gadget, app, or device that might use AI.
- Write or draw each one you find. Next to each item, write one sentence explaining what the AI inside it does.
- Try to find at least three AI helpers at home.
- ROUND 2 — TRAVEL SPOTTER
- Next time you travel anywhere — by car, bus, bike, or on foot — watch for AI at work.
- Look for: navigation apps, traffic signals that change based on car flow, bus arrival signs, cameras watching intersections, or anything that seems to be reacting to what is happening around it.
- Write down one AI helper you spotted on your journey and explain what it was doing.
- ROUND 3 — STORE OR SCHOOL SCOUT
- At the next store or school day, keep your AI Spotter eyes open.
- At school: look for apps, tools, or programs that adjust to you, listen to you, or help you practice.
- At a store: look for self-checkout machines, screens suggesting products, cameras watching aisles, or fast checkout technology.
- Write down one AI helper and explain what job it does.
- ROUND 4 — THE SURPRISE SPOTTER
- Find one AI helper that surprised you — one you never thought about before doing this lesson.
- Draw it, describe what it does, and explain why it surprised you.
- BONUS CHALLENGE
- Present your AI Spotter field notes to a family member who did not do this lesson. Explain three AI helpers you found and why each one is useful. See if they can guess where the AI is hiding in each example before you tell them.
Talking About What You Found
After your AI Spotter Challenge, think about these questions. Did you find more AI helpers than you expected? Most people are surprised by how many there are — not because AI is sneaky, but because it blends in so naturally that we stop noticing it. Were all the AI helpers useful? Probably most of them were. Were any of them annoying? Maybe a suggestion that was completely wrong, or an app that would not stop recommending the same thing? That is worth noticing too — AI makes mistakes and sometimes its help is less helpful than intended. Were any AI helpers invisible — things you would not have noticed before this module? Those are the most interesting ones to think about, because they remind you that a lot of work is happening behind the scenes of everyday life.
Now that you know what to look for, you cannot unsee it. AI is everywhere. Keep your curious eyes open and you will keep finding new examples — and understanding the world around you a little more every time.
You notice a checkout screen at the grocery store automatically weighs your bag and alerts a worker when something seems off. What AI job is happening?
An AI Spotter finds an app that shows a real-time countdown to the next bus. Why is this AI, not just a schedule?
After the AI Spotter Challenge, a student says they found 12 AI helpers in one day and were surprised. Why might someone find so many?
