Asking Good Questions
Have you ever asked someone for help and their answer was not quite what you needed? Maybe you asked, "What should I do?" and they said, "It depends!" Frustrating, right? When you work with AI, the question you ask makes a HUGE difference. A fuzzy question gets a fuzzy answer. A great question gets a great answer. Today you are going to learn how to ask questions that unlock the best help AI can give you.
What Makes a Question Good?
A good question is clear and specific. It tells the helper exactly what you need. Imagine you walked into a library and said, "I want a book." The librarian might not know where to start! But if you said, "I want a funny book about talking animals for kids my age," the librarian could help you right away. AI works the same way. Compare these two questions: Fuzzy question: "Tell me about animals." Better question: "What do dolphins eat, and how do they catch their food?" The second question is clear, specific, and tells the AI exactly what you want to learn. You will get a much more useful answer. Here are three ingredients of a good question. First, be specific. Instead of asking about a big topic, zoom in on exactly what you want to know. Second, give context. Tell the AI a little bit about why you are asking. For example: "I am writing a report for second grade about rainforests. Can you explain what a canopy layer is in simple words?" Third, check the answer. After the AI answers, ask yourself: Did it answer my real question? Is this information I can check somewhere? Does this make sense?
Your question should not be too big or too small — it should be just right. Too big: "Tell me everything about space." Too small: "Is the sky blue?" Just right: "Why does the sky look orange at sunset?"

One more trick: you can ask follow-up questions. If the first answer the AI gives you is close but not quite right, you can say something like, "Can you explain that more simply?" or "Can you give me an example?" or "I did not understand the last part — can you try again?" Good questioners do not give up after one try. They keep refining until they get what they need. That is a skill that helps with AI, with teachers, with books, and with life.
If an AI's first answer is confusing or incomplete, try asking again with more detail. Smart question-askers refine and follow up — they do not just accept the first answer.
Priya wants to know why leaves change color in autumn. Which question will get her the best answer from an AI?
After Priya gets an answer from an AI, what should she do first?
Question Upgrade Workshop
- Work with a partner or on your own for this activity.
- Look at the five fuzzy questions below. Rewrite each one as a sharp, specific, helpful question that you could ask an AI assistant.
- 1. Tell me about dogs.
- 2. What is science?
- 3. Help me with my project.
- 4. Tell me something interesting.
- 5. What should I read?
- After you have written your improved questions, swap with a partner and give each other feedback. Were the questions specific enough? Did they include context? Would they get a great answer?
- Bonus: actually ask one of your improved questions to an AI assistant and see what happens. Was the answer helpful? Could you make the question even better?
