Telling the Truth About AI's Help
Imagine your friend helped you build a really cool model rocket for a science fair. When the judges came around, you said you built it all by yourself. Your friend heard you say that and felt sad. Giving credit means saying out loud who helped you. It is a way of being honest AND being kind at the same time. The good news is that giving credit to AI is just as easy as giving credit to a friend — and it feels great.
What Does It Mean to Give Credit?
Giving credit means telling people the truth about where something came from — who made it, who helped, and how. When AI helps you with something, you can give credit by saying things like: 'I used an AI tool to help me brainstorm ideas for this.' 'An AI helped me with the first draft, and then I rewrote it in my own words.' 'I asked an AI to help me find some facts, and then I checked them.' You do not need to make a big announcement every time. But when someone asks, or when it matters, be ready to tell the truth. That is what honest people do.
Giving credit does not make you look weak. It makes you look trustworthy. People who are honest about their help are the people others want to work with and believe in.
Here is a story about giving credit. Anna wrote a poem for her school newsletter. She had a great idea for the topic — a poem about autumn leaves racing in the wind. She typed her idea into an AI to get a few rhyme suggestions. Then she rewrote the whole poem in her own words, adding her own details about the tree in her backyard. When the poem was published, the editor said it was wonderful and asked, 'Did anyone help you?' Anna said, 'I came up with the idea and wrote most of it myself, but I used an AI tool to help me find some rhymes.' The editor smiled. 'That is a really grown-up and honest thing to say,' she told Anna. Anna felt proud — not just of the poem, but of herself.
Sometimes kids worry that if they say AI helped them, they will get in trouble or people will think they did not work hard. But usually the opposite is true. When you tell the truth about AI's help, people see that you: — Know how to use new tools responsibly. — Are confident and honest enough to speak up. — Did real thinking even while using a tool. Most teachers and adults are impressed when kids are upfront about the tools they use. What matters is that you understand the work and did real thinking along the way.
If you are ever unsure whether to mention AI's help, ask yourself: If my teacher or parent found out AI helped, would they be surprised? If yes, you should probably mention it.

Anna used AI to help with rhymes in her poem, then rewrote everything herself. When asked if anyone helped her, she told the truth about the AI. What did this make the editor think of her?
When is it important to tell someone that AI helped you with your work?
Credit Card Practice
- Think of three times you might use AI to help with something — like writing, drawing ideas, or answering a question.
- For each one, write out loud what you would say to give credit honestly.
- For example: 'I used an AI to help me come up with rhymes. Then I wrote the poem myself.'
- Try making the sentence sound natural — like something you would say to a friend.
- Practice saying it out loud. How does it feel to say it? Does it feel brave? Comfortable?
- Remember: saying it once makes the next time much easier.
