AI-Made Pictures & Videos

Have you ever looked at a photo and thought, 'Wow, that cannot be real' — but it looked completely real? AI can now make pictures and even videos of things that never actually happened. That is amazing technology, but it also means we need to be extra thoughtful about what we see online.

AI Can Make Very Convincing Fake Images

Just like AI can write words, it can also create pictures and videos. You give it instructions — 'make a photo of a purple elephant wearing a top hat' — and it creates one that looks like a real photograph. These are sometimes called AI-generated images. They can be wonderful and fun for art projects and stories. But here is the important part: some people use this technology to make fake pictures and videos look like real news or real events. Something that looks like a photograph used to be strong proof that something really happened. Now, AI means we have to ask: Is this a real photo, or was it made by AI?

Not Everything You See Is Real

AI can create pictures and videos that look completely real but never actually happened. Always ask: Is this a real photo, or could AI have made this?

Here is a clue to help you spot AI-made images. Look closely at the details. Hands are tricky for AI — sometimes a person in an AI picture has too many fingers or strangely shaped hands. Background details may look fuzzy or strange when you zoom in. Text in an AI image often looks scrambled or made-up, not real words. Shadows and lighting sometimes do not quite add up. None of these clues are perfect — AI is getting better all the time. The most important habit is simply to pause and ask questions before believing or sharing an image.

Complete the rule about AI-made images.

Before believing or sharing an image online, it is smart to and check if it is real.

What should you do when you see an image that seems unbelievable? First, pause. Do not immediately share it or believe it. Second, ask a grown-up — especially if the image is about news, people you know, or something important. Third, look for other sources. If a big event really happened, more than one trusted news source will report on it with verified photos. Remember: sharing a fake image by accident is still spreading false information. When in doubt, do not share it.

Pause Before You Share

If a photo or video seems unbelievable or too wild to be true, pause before sharing it. Ask a grown-up and look for other trusted sources to confirm it is real.

You see a photo online of a famous landmark destroyed by a giant wave. It looks real but seems unbelievable. What should you do first?

Which of these is a clue that a photo might have been made by AI?

Real or AI? Detective Game

  1. Look through a magazine, newspaper, or trusted news website with a grown-up.
  2. Find three photographs. For each one, ask: Does anything look strange — hands, text, shadows, or backgrounds?
  3. Talk with your grown-up about each photo: Do you think it is real or AI-made?
  4. Discuss: Why is it important to think carefully about images before believing or sharing them?
  5. Write or draw your three photos and mark each one Real or Unsure.
