Asking AI Good Questions

We have learned so much about what AI really is and how it works. Now let's put that knowledge to good use. If AI is a tool — and we know it is — then knowing how to use it well makes it much more helpful. The biggest secret to getting great help from AI is asking a great question. Let's practice.

What Makes a Question 'Good'?

Think about asking someone for help. If you walk up to a librarian and say 'Help me find something,' that is hard to answer. But if you say 'Can you help me find a book about dolphins for kids my age?' — now that is something they can work with! AI is the same. Vague questions get vague answers. Clear, specific questions get much more useful answers. A good question for AI has three things: 1. It says WHAT you want. 2. It gives a detail or example to help AI understand. 3. It is polite and easy to understand.

The Big Idea

The clearer and more specific your question is, the more useful AI's answer will be. A great question is a superpower.

Let's compare two questions. Weak question: 'Tell me about animals.' Strong question: 'Can you tell me three interesting facts about dolphins that a 9-year-old would find surprising?' The strong question says what you want (three facts), gives a detail (about dolphins), and tells AI who is asking (a 9-year-old). AI can now give you a much more focused, useful answer. Remember from Lesson 5: AI does not know who you are. So if your age or level matters, include it in your question!

Prompt Challenge

A clear question gets a better answer. Write a clear question to ask an AI about something you want to understand.

Your prompt should…

  • Ask about one clear topic
  • Tell the AI to explain it in simple words
  • Ask for an example to help you understand

One more helpful tip: if you do not like AI's answer, you can ask again with a better question. That is called refining your prompt. It is like adjusting a recipe until it tastes just right. The more you practice, the better you will get at communicating with this tool.

Refine Until It's Right

If the first answer is not quite what you needed, try again with a clearer question. Add a detail, change the wording, or ask AI to simplify or expand. You are in charge.

Which question will probably get the most useful answer from AI?

If AI gives you a confusing or unhelpful answer, what is the best next step?

Question Upgrade Challenge

  1. Take these weak questions and rewrite each one as a strong question.
  2. Weak: 'Tell me about dogs.'
  3. Weak: 'Help me with math.'
  4. Weak: 'What should I eat?'
  5. For each one, add: WHAT you want, a detail or example, and who is asking or what level of explanation you need.
  6. Share your upgraded questions with a family member.
  7. Try one of them with a real AI tool (with a grown-up's help) and see if you get a better answer than the weak version would have gotten!
