Human-Smart vs Computer-Smart

We have been learning a lot of honest things about AI. Some of those truths might make you think AI is not very impressive. But here is something equally true: AI is incredibly good at certain things. And so are you — at completely different things. Neither kind of smart is better. They are just different. Let's explore what each one means.

What Humans Are Great At

You are amazing at things that come from living in the real world with real feelings and real relationships. You can comfort a friend who is sad. You can smell that dinner is burning before the smoke alarm goes off. You can tell when something just feels wrong — even if you cannot explain why. You can create something brand new because an idea sparked in your imagination. You grow, change, and learn from experience in ways that go far beyond reading text.

The Big Idea

Human-smart means feeling, imagining, caring, creating, and adapting to the messy real world. Computer-smart means processing huge amounts of information very fast, with perfect consistency, and no need for sleep.

Now let's look at computer-smart. AI can read and find patterns in millions of pages in a second. It can translate between a hundred languages. It can check your spelling in every sentence at the same time. It never gets tired or bored. It does the same quality of work on the ten-thousandth task as on the first. Those are real superpowers. They are just very different from your superpowers.

Match each example to the kind of smart it shows.

The best results often happen when human-smart and computer-smart work together. A doctor uses AI to look at thousands of medical scans quickly, then uses human judgment and care to talk with the patient and make a decision. The AI does what it is good at. The doctor does what she is good at.

A Great Team

You and AI can be a great team — as long as you each do what you are good at. You bring curiosity, judgment, creativity, and care. AI brings speed, consistency, and pattern-finding. Together, you can do more than either could alone.

  3. In your column, list three to five things you can do that AI cannot — things that come from your feelings, your body, your relationships.
  4. In the AI column, list two to three things AI can do that would be very hard for a human.
  5. Circle the items in each column that you think are most important.
  6. Share your list and explain your choices to someone in your family.
