What Is a Goal?
Have you ever decided you really wanted something? Maybe you wanted to build the tallest block tower you could. Maybe you wanted to finish your homework before dinner so you could watch TV. Maybe you wanted to surprise your parent with breakfast in bed. That thing you decided you wanted — that is a goal. And today we are going to learn all about goals, because every AI agent needs one!
A Goal Is What You Want to Happen
A goal is something you want to make happen. It is a picture in your mind of how you want things to be. Right now things might be one way. Your goal describes the way you want things to be instead. For example: right now your room is messy. Your goal is to have a clean room. Right now you are hungry. Your goal is to eat a snack. Right now you have not read your book. Your goal is to finish three chapters. Goals tell you where you are trying to get to. Without a goal, you do not know what direction to go!
A goal is the thing you want to make happen. It describes where you want to end up. Without a goal, you do not know where you are going — and neither does an AI agent!
Why AI Agents Need Goals
An AI agent is a computer helper that can do tasks on its own. It can search for information, organize files, answer questions, or even order supplies. But an AI agent cannot do any of those things unless it knows what it is trying to do. Think of an AI agent like a very enthusiastic helper. You walk up and say: go! The helper would just stand there looking confused. Go where? Do what? But if you say: find me a library book about dolphins — now the helper has a goal. It knows exactly what it is trying to make happen. Off it goes! The goal is the starting gun. It is the thing that tells the agent: this is what success looks like. Go make it happen.

Goals are everywhere. Your teacher has a goal: help every student learn. Your school cook has a goal: serve hot lunch to everyone by noon. Even a little robot vacuum has a goal: clean the entire floor without bumping into furniture. Large or small, simple or complicated, every helpful thing that happens started with someone setting a goal.
Goals can be tiny (eat one more bite of vegetables) or enormous (fly a rocket to the moon). AI agents can have tiny goals or enormous ones too. The size does not matter — what matters is that the goal is clear enough to work toward.
Match each goal to the helper who has that goal.

My Goal Gallery
- You are going to make a tiny Goal Gallery!
- Get a sheet of paper and fold it into four boxes.
- In each box, draw one goal that someone in your life has right now. It could be your goal, a family member's goal, a pet's goal, or even a helpful machine's goal.
- Under each drawing, write one sentence: WHO has the goal, and WHAT the goal is.
- When you are done, pick your favorite goal from the gallery and share it. Explain why that goal matters to the person or thing that has it.
