Meet an AI Agent
You already know the difference between helpers that talk and helpers that do. Now get ready for something extra exciting: a helper that uses artificial intelligence to decide what to do, and then goes and does it! This special kind of helper is called an AI agent. The word agent is an important word. An agent is someone — or something — that acts on behalf of someone else to get a job done. A real-estate agent helps you find a house. A travel agent helps plan your trip. An AI agent helps you reach a goal — using the power of a computer brain.
What Makes Something an AI Agent?
An AI agent has three special things that work together. First, it has a goal — some result it is trying to achieve. Maybe the goal is to deliver a package, clean the floor, or remind you to take medicine. Second, it can sense the world around it — it takes in information so it knows what is happening. A robot vacuum senses when it bumps into a wall. A smart calendar app notices what day and time it is. Third, it takes actions — it actually does things to move closer to its goal. It might turn left, send a message, or make a sound. Goal plus sensing plus action equals AI agent!
An AI agent is a computer helper that can sense what is happening, use AI to decide what to do, and then take action to reach a goal — all on its own!
Let us meet one AI agent up close. Imagine a robot delivery bot at a school. Its goal is to bring a package from the front office to Room 12. First it senses the hallway — it sees the walls, doors, and whether students are walking nearby. Then it decides: go straight for ten meters, then turn right. Then it acts: it rolls forward, turns the corner, and stops at the door of Room 12. The robot did all of that on its own. Nobody walked with it and told it what to do each second. It sensed, decided, and acted — over and over — until it reached its goal.
Fill in the missing words.
AI agents come in all shapes and sizes. Some AI agents live inside computers and phones. They do not have wheels or arms, but they still take actions — like searching the web, sending an email, setting a reminder, or booking an appointment. Other AI agents have physical bodies — like robots that sort items in a warehouse or drones that take photos of farmland. Big or small, physical or digital, every one of them has the same three ingredients: a goal, the ability to sense, and the ability to act.

AI agents can seem like magic, but they are not. They follow rules built by engineers, and they can make mistakes. People always need to check an agent's work, especially for important jobs.

Design Your Own AI Agent
- Imagine you could build any AI agent you wanted to help someone in your home or school.
- On a piece of paper, answer these three questions:
- 1. What is the GOAL of your agent? What does it need to achieve?
- 2. What does your agent need to SENSE? What information does it need to collect?
- 3. What ACTIONS will your agent take to reach the goal?
- Draw a picture of your agent and label the three parts.
- Share your design with someone and explain why people would still need to check your agent's work.
